The Tory Island Currach

(curach Oilean Thorai)

Tory Island lies 7 miles [11 km] off the coast of Donegal, where the Gaelic language and a unique communal society still survive. A hybrid currach  type appeared at the end of the last century when a resourceful fisherman is thought to have copied aspects of visiting yachts to produce the hybrid replicated by Meitheal Mara. The boat in the Meitheal Mara collection is based on an exhaustive survey of a Tory currach which was deposited with the National Museum in 1921.
