The Kilkee Currach

(curach Chille Chaoidhe)

Since both the Aran islanders and the fishermen of Kilkee have fished in the same great bay of Galway, the two types of curach h are not dissimilar in construction and like most currachs some ingenuity was required due to the poor supply of local timber. One refinement is the addition of a board, know locally as the Bulwark, which envelopes the sides and stern, preventing nets from snagging the tholepins.

CONSTRUCTION
The double gunwhales are constructed as with all currachs using the inverted method, starting from the top down, 35 ribs are wedged in the lower (or false gunwhale) and clenched to 13 laths with copper nails. The hull is then covered with 18oz cotton duck canvas and coated with coal tar.
