This 4/5 man currach features a removable fourth thwart for cargo
purposes (nets, lobster pots etc.) with a cargo capacity of one ton, and is used on the north Mayo coast for fishing
and transport. This large vessel is of the double gunwale
construction. Four oars or sometimes 8 paddles are used for
propulsion
CONSTRUCTION -
24 oak ribs are attached to laths by using clenched copper nails, the
upper gunwales of deal are fitted with eight oar cleats which hold
the double thole pins in place. The hull is covered with 18 oz cotton
duck canvas and heavily coated with coal tar.
